Sam Fender has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the MVT, which functions to save the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

He was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record the album was declared the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the essential function local spots had in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, top acts such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, raising over £100k on his recent tour to assist numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported venues that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that helped musicians and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in big venues backs the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his award prize money to worthy causes.

Back when the band earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their album their work, lead singer the singer announced that the band would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

That year, artist she divided her award among a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist explained to outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the community center that supported their group, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had saved several small stages in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in Southampton and the second in the city were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
