Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
